Labor and Community Mobilize for “Workers Over Billionaires” on Labor Day
Atlanta Joins 2,000+ National Actions to Demand an Economy That Puts People First
Atlanta, GA – On Monday, September 1, at 3:00 PM, a broad coalition of labor unions, grassroots organizers, and community members will gather at Woodruff Park in downtown Atlanta for a mass Workers Over Billionaires rally and march. The action is one of more than 2,000 coordinated mobilizations happening nationwide as part of the May Day Strong Coalition’s Labor Day of Action.
The rally, led by groups across Georgia, calls out the ongoing billionaire-backed attacks on public education, healthcare access, worker protections, and immigrant rights. Rather than cookouts and parades alone, this Labor Day will be a collective stand for dignity, democracy, and economic justice.
“We outnumber the billionaires,” said Katie Giede, Waffle House worker with the Union of Southern Service Workers, on why she’s joining Monday’s action. “I’m tired of deciding between bills and food, not being able to get new brakes for my car, and keeping quiet about it because ‘that’s the way it’s always been. It’s time to recognize our power and make some real changes to the way the economy is run so that the ones at the bottom actually benefit.”
This month’s action arrives in the wake of yet another direct assault on organized labor. Just this week, President Donald Trump issued a sweeping executive order eliminating collective bargaining rights for workers across key federal agencies—including NASA, the National Weather Service, and the U.S. Agency for Global Media—by unilaterally designating them as national security entities. This unprecedented move follows a recent Supreme Court ruling greenlighting similar actions and marks an aggressive expansion of Trump's campaign to undermine the civil service, erode workplace protections, and dismantle unions across government.
Participating organizations in Atlanta include:
* Indivisible Georgia Coalition (IGC)
* Georgia Voices United (GAVU)
* 50501 Georgia
* Atlanta Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)
* AFGE Local 2883
* Atlanta Rideshare Drivers Union
* Georgia STAND-UP
* Atlanta North Georgia Labor Council (ANGLC)
* Starbucks Workers United (SBWU)

* El Refugio
* American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)
* Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL)

Organizers say the rally builds on the momentum of earlier 2025 mobilizations such as Hands Off, May Day, No Kings, and Good Trouble, all of which centered on the needs of working people over elite interests. This month’s theme, Workers Over Billionaires, is a direct response to what organizers describe as a growing concentration of wealth and power that threatens democracy itself.
“Working people built this country,” national organizers wrote in a coalition statement, “and we know how to take care of each other. This Labor Day, we stand strong—for public schools over private profits, healthcare over hedge funds, and shared prosperity over billionaire-bought politics.”
The event is free and open to the public.
